Each year, thousands of motorcyclists die in wrecks.

In New Jersey, 53 bikers died as a result of crashes in 2018. The age of people riding motorcycles, distracted driving and increased traffic likely contributes to the death toll. Here are some safety tips to help you remain safe on the road.

Check for road readiness

Before embarking upon the open road, check your motorcycle’s brakes, headlights, turn signals, fluid levels and tire pressure and tread. Further, look around the bike for indications of oil or gas leaks. When toting cargo, balance the weight properly. If you have a passenger, ensure he or she mounts the motorcycle after the engine starts and sits as far forward as practical keeping both feet on the footrests.

Wear proper attire

Protecting your head and brain is essential if in a motorcycle crash. The best chance for suitable defense against injury is a motorcycle helmet that meets the Department of Transportation’s standards.

Additionally, cover your limbs in their entirety whenever driving your bike. Heavy denim and leather provide optimal protection. Shoes should cover your ankles and gloves give better steering grip and protect hands if an accident occurs. Bright-colored clothes make bikers more visible to the other drivers on the road.

Follow laws of the road

Obey all local traffic laws including traffic lights, signs, lane markings and speed limits. Remember to allow plenty of space between your motorcycle and other vehicles. Ride defensively and never operate your bike under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Though riding a motorcycle is exhilarating, it can be dangerous. Be sure to operate yours in accordance with safety guidelines.
